Essentials for Young Lives Drive
Sandy Keedy, President and Creative Director of Hayes Martin Associates, Inc., has announced that the firm was a participant in HomeAid Orange County’s first “Essentials for Young Lives Drive”, a community-wide effort to collect “essential” baby items for homeless mothers and their children. Keedy serves on the Board of Directors for HomeAid Orange County and has been actively involved with the organization for many years. “I have seen firsthand how HomeAid improves the lives of homeless families and individuals both locally and nationally. We are proud to support HomeAid Orange County’s newest endeavor which benefits homeless infants and toddlers through the county.”
The Newport Beach-based agency specializing in the marketing of the residential lifestyle industry set up a designated collection site in its office where employees and colleagues donated diapers (size newborn to toddler), baby wipes, baby food, formula, bottles, and other general baby products. The essential items collected by Hayes Martin were picked-up by HomeAid and were distributed to 15 Orange County non-profit organizations that serve homeless families and children.
“It’s hard enough to turn away from a homeless man with his hand out. But just imagine if he was a toddler with his baby sister? How would you help them?” questioned Keedy. “HomeAid makes it simple for each one of us to help those in need become healthy and stable. If families and individuals around us are safe and secure, our community becomes stronger.”
“There's not just one way to help. You can donate money. You can donate goods. You can volunteer your time. We thank everyone who joined with us for the first annual “Essentials for Young Lives Drive” to make a lasting difference in the lives of homeless mothers and their children,” continued Keedy. “Every day there is a need to help someone take a step toward self-sufficiency. HomeAid’s giving options assure your donation reaches real families right away to make a significant impact on their future and the future of our community.”

Questions about growing lavender in my "annual" garden?
So I have a garden plot through an organization in my town (b/c I live in an apartment and can't have a garden here). Anyway, the only plots available this year were annuals, so I can't plant things that will be hard to get rid of at the end of this summer (and no invasives, i.e. spearmint and some other things that I don't remember or care to plant).
ANYWAY I really REALLY want to plant lavender, but one of my friends said that it gets very big and woody and will be hard to dig up/get rid of at the end of the summer. Is that true? I'm in "zone 6" I believe (southern MI) if it helps.
Thanks!
Tim has a great idea, put the lavender in a big nursery flowerpot (black plastic with holes in bottom) and just sink it in the ground so the lip is even with soil. In fall pull it up ( and bring it in the house in a sunny window if you have one. You might be able to keep it alive until next spring!)
I doubt if a lavender plant would get so big in just one growing season that it would be hard to yank up anyway, they dont grow real fast and have fairly shallow roots. And they really need full sun and prefer rather dry, sandy soil. Too much moisture and they can get mildew or die.
And, the only lavender I know of that will bloom the first year from seed is Lady Lavender. So unless you are buying an established 1 yr old potted plant you wont get blooms this year from any other type.
BUT!, you might try geraniums. Yep, they can come in varieties with scented leaves (like rose, almond, lemon and lavender!) are considered annuals in zones 5/6, are pretty easy to grow and bloom the first year. They also are easy to dig up, repot and keep on an east, west or south window and the regular flowering type should bloom all winter (I have one in an east window that is 8 years old and has never been in the garden, the clusters of crimson are the brightest thing in the house about mid January even though I forget to water it for weeks at a time). Here is a link I found to an herb store with lavender scented geraniums.

"Scented Geranium. Pelargonium 'Lavender Lad'. Tender Perennial. Two toned lavender and white flowers atop small, trailing, moss-green leaves. Use in potpourri, jellies, and tea.
